Miniatures and Morals

Miniatures and Morals

The Christian Novels of Jane Austen

by Peter J. Leithart
Publisher: Canon Press
Trade Paperback, 197 pages
Price: $16.00

Not only are Austen's novels still widely read, they continue to influence modern film and literature. In both their moral content and their focused, highly detailed, "miniaturist" execution, they reveal Austen's mastery of the art of fiction and her concern for Christian virtues exercised within communities. She entertains, edifies, and challenges men and women readers alike. From theological and literary angles, Leithart analyzes character and theme while summarizing each of Austen's major works. Including helpful review and thought questions for each section, this book is an excellent introduction to Austen for students and for all who desire a richer appreciation of her enduring genius.

This is an excellent companion to anyone who is reading Jane Austen for the first or thirty-third time! Mr. Leihart leads you through each of her major novels and explains their lessons and themes. I enjoy the novels so much more now. And this book is fun to read just by itself... although it does make me want to pick up the novels again.
As the opening chapter states, Austens' books are for males too! And so is this one. Boys as well as girls have lessons to learn from Austen, and can enjoy them, too!
A note on ages: if your child is old enough to read Austen, they are old enough for this book.
