One day Little Brother and Little Sister run away to the forest to escape their wicked stepmother. Tired and thirsty, Little Brother drinks from a nearby brook, despite its warning:

"Drink not of me! Drink not of me!
Or to a fawn changed you'll be."

Upon sipping from the brook, Little Brother is indeed transformed into a young deer. When the King of the country organizes a hunt, he tracks the deer back to Little Sister. The King is smitten—thus initiating Little Sister's transformation into the Queen. They are not out of trouble yet, however, as the evil stepmother returns to the scene, casting her dark shadow over all.

Little Brother and Little Sister, a much-loved tale by the Brothers Grimm, is packed with romance, murder, supernatural events, and bizarre plot twists. Caldecott Medalist Barbara Cooney brilliantly captures the spirit of the story with beautiful, stark illustrations.
