Anna Hibiscus lives in a beautiful house in Africa filled with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Anna is chosen to sing for a visiting president, must learn how to care for her curly hair, and learns how blessed she is to have the things she has.

Through it all her parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles support her. Not only are they kind, they also allow her to learn lessons on her own, letting her fail but still being there to support her. She is allowed to discover things on her own.

The family is lifted up as ideal and (though a bit too idyllic) is a positive portrayal of multigenerational community. And all of the family has a good work ethic. They are committed to "working hard in their offices and businesses and churches to make Africa a Better Place."

Anna Hibiscus and her family are committed to making their country a better place. May young readers be likewise inspired thanks to this excellent series.

Review by Lauren Shearer
Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
