When Sophie is seven, her grandfather gives her an olive tree. Not only is this a strange birthday present, the tree is all the way in Greece where Sophie’s grandfather came from. Sophie would much rather have been given a skate board, and she doesn’t understand why her Grandfather would give her an Olive tree. But when her Grandfather is dying, he gives Sophie a string of beads that belonged to Sophie’s grandmother, and asks her to take them to Greece and hang the string of beads on the Olive tree he gave to Sophie. Now Sophie and her mother get ready to make the journey back to Greece. When Sophie sees her home country, she understands why her Grandpa gave her the olive tree and the beads. Her Grandpa was passing his legacy on to Sophie. And after she hangs the beads on her olive tree, Sophie promises to come back to the land of her heritage.
