Few great wars have been fought out by each side with greater intensity of conviction in the rightness of its cause than the American civil war. Henty makes admirable use of this clash of opposing convictions in the story of a young Virginian planter, who proves his sympathy with the slaves of brutal masters, but goes on to serve under Lee and Jackson.
