The author of The White Calf, winner of the Little, Brown Canadian Children's Book award, continues in this book the story of Eagle Child and the Blackfoot people. Five years have passed since Eagle Child's parting with his white buffalo calf, and the fierce young bull has become a fearful marauder of the plains. But the Blackfoot nation is now confronted with a threat more ominous than any which an evil spirit in animal form could present. White Men are coming by hundreds into Indian territory, and slaughtering buffalo in alarming numbers.

To learn the strength of the white man, Eagle Child and the scouts of the Blackfeet set out on an extensive reconnaissance.

Here is the stirring account of their expedition and the devastating power that is arrayed against them. It is a vivid, haunting portrayal of the Indians' last days of dominion over the plains.
