The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Something mysterious was going on at the farm of that Jeanie was certain. She knew she was not dreaming when she heard voices in the night long after everyone was asleep. But the Aldens never mentioned receiving late visitors, and who would come to call on respectable people at that hour?

Indeed, everything at the Aldens' seemed a little strange to Jeanie. Mr. and Mrs. Alden had taken Jeanie in after her father died of pneumonia at the beginning of the Civil War and her mother was forced to separate the family to make ends meet. But Mrs. Alden looked cold and forbidding, and Jeanie longed to be home again, surrounded by her brothers and sisters.

Then Jeanie learned the secret: the farm was a station on the Underground Railroad. Mr. and Mrs. Alden were helping runaway slaves escape to freedom in Canada. Little did Jeanie imagine that someday she would help, too, and make her own contribution to the cause of freedom.

How Jeanie wins the trust and love of the Aldens, and how she helps save the fugitive slaves from being discovered by prying neighbors, make an exciting story which brings the past alive and is as relevant to today as the morning newspaper.

The distinctive drawings of Ann Grifalconi provide a perfect complement for the text.
