One advantage of our family vacation to Texas in 2010 was our introduction to Stone Age. Eli’s cousin is (and always has been) an avid board game player, and this is one of his favorites—it quickly became one of ours as well.

In this strategy game, players struggle to survive the Stone Age by working as hunters, collectors, farmers, and tool makers. As you gather resources and raise animals, you work to build the tools needed to build your civilization.

Players use up to 10 spiky-haired tribe members each in 3 phases. In the first phase, players place their men in regions of the board that they think will benefit them, including the hunt, the trading center, or the quarries. In the second phase, the starting player activates each of those areas in whatever sequence he chooses, followed in turn by the other players. In the third phase, players must have enough food available to feed their populations, or they face losing resources or points.

Stone Age is simple enough to grasp in your first playing, but the possibilities for different strategies are endless. The artwork for the game (see below) is extremely good, and the game pieces are well crafted. Though more complex than many classic family games like Life or Monopoly, Stone Age is a great family game for kids ages 10 and up. It’s currently ranked the #2 family game on a top board game site.

If you enjoy Settlers of Catan or Dominion, we’re sure you will enjoy Stone Age!

Rated #2 Family Game on boardgamegeek.com!

In-Depth Game - Lots of Paths to Success
Joseph F of Oregon, 11/27/2013
First, this game doesn't really presuppose or support evolution, or an earth that's billions of years old. Its just a game where you control a group of people during a hunter-gatherer period.
And its a good game! A decently complex game where each player controls a "tribe" of spikey-haired cave men trying to expand and develop their culture. There are several ways of getting points, which let players specialize, or try to develop a little in each area of culture.

Great production - comes with wooden dice and a real leather cup to roll from!
2-4 players
1-2 hours, depending on player count
Slight caution - Players can grow their tribes by placing two of their worker pieces at the "mating hut." Three come back. Necessary game mechanic, but could lead to further conversations.
Great game that you can play over and over again and not get old! If you want to try it out for cheaper, there is an iOS app of this game that works really well for $5 or so.
