Song and Dance Man

Song and Dance Man

Grandpa used to be a vaudeville man. Sometimes, when the grandchildren come over to visit, he takes them up to the attic. Out comes his hat, his shoes, his cane. With the lamps as spotlights and the children as his adoring audience, Grandpa twirls and taps and sings and dances.

Once more he becomes the song and dance man.

This sweet story won the Caldecott medal for Stephen Gammell's jubilant colored pencil illustrations. His pictures are full of exuberant movement. The rainbow of colors in the shadows, the clothing, the faces, bring a glitter and joy to every single picture. And the story reflects that. Though the children observe that their grandpa may still miss his vaudeville days, they know that now they are his favorite audience to perform for. It's a beautiful look at the connection between grandchildren and their grandparents. Some things transcend age difference and even time itself.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
