On the night that Ronia was born, a thunderstorm raged over the mountain and the woodland creatures crept into their holes and hiding places. But in Matt's castle and among his band of robbers there was only joy—for Matt now had a spirited little black-haired daughter.
Soon Ronia learns to leap and dance and yell with the rest of the robbers, but it is in Matt's Wood, all alone, that she feels truly at home. Whether climbing steep cliffs, jumping over waterfalls, or running from angry gray dwarfs and wild harpies, Ronia defies all, for Matt teaches her the art of living fearlessly in the forest.
Then one day Ronia meets Birk, the son of Borka, Matt's rival robber chief. Soon after Ronia and Birk become friends, the worst quarrel yet between the rival bands begins, and Ronia and Birk are right in the middle.
