What is protocol, anyway? Is it important to observe? Is it possible to observe? Do real standards of protocol even exist anymore? Sandra Boswell defines protocol as "preferred, correct codes of conduct," and to each of the successive questions she would respond with an emphatic "Yes!" Though most people in our contemporary society seem to think little of etiquette or manners, Boswell suggests they are essential for Christians in order to evidence a life attuned to the truth of the Gospel.

The home is obviously the foremost place for kids to learn protocol (and if that word sounds formal, it is—but it's far from obnoxious or snobbish), and the author begins with basic rules for teaching your kids courtesy and guiding them toward a life of respectful social interaction. A chapter for teachers follows, and then comes a long section (only four chapters, but each filled with content) outlining everything from how to sit at table to proper dress to how to ride in vehicles. Some of Boswell's tips are unexpected—it's just as rude to speak poorly of oneself as to constantly brag; most are the kind of thing we all know but often forget to practice.

By calling attention to the familiar and the unfamiliar, the author not only demonstrates good behavior, she encourages readers to consider all their actions and determine whether their grasp of protocol is as sufficient as we often assume our own to be. She finishes with four contemporary essays on protocol addressing specific situations or standards, as well as an appendix containing 16 suggested house rules with Scriptural support and a list of further resources.

This is by no means an exhaustive treatment of protocol or social etiquette. Boswell, a longtime protocol instructor herself, is the first to acknowledge this—and the first to express her real goal of encouraging Christians to think about and implement good manners and polite behavior. While following protocol has advantages (like getting the job you want, or becoming more popular and successful), these concerns are secondary to the desire each Christian should have to present a Christlike image to the world. Observing proper protocol is an all-too-overlooked element in this endeavor—this book is a call to, and encouragement for, those to whom Protocol Matters.

C. Hollis Crossman used to be a child. Now he's a husband and father who loves church, good food, and weird stuff. He might be a mythical creature, but he's definitely not a centaur. Read more of his reviews here.
