How vines get where they do—and how they manage to stay there—is a fascinating story. Vines, of course, do not have the sturdy stems or strong trunks with which other plants support themselves. This book describes the getting-around-and-holding-on methods of all kinds of vines, from the familiar morning-glory to the cup-and-saucer vine with its oddly shaped flowers. There are some vines whose stems twine around supports, others which climb by leaves or tendrils or roots, and still others which weave in and out of other plants or trellises. Mrs. Selsam deals with all these in clear and engaging fashion, using common vines to illustrate each type. Directions for simple experiments that the reader can do himself add to the usefulness of the book.

Many excellent drawings and large type make Play With Vines attractive to young readers, and the thoroughly interesting presentation of the subject will appeal to their elders as well.
