Historical Setting: Swiss Alps, early 14th century

The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

The thrilling struggle of life in the Swiss Alps, the scintillating glamour of an Austrian court, the hopes and fears and hardships of the Swiss people seeing, under the leadership of William Tell, to escape the Austrian rule—these form a colorful and thrilling background for the adventure story of Bruno, an orphan boy, who enters the service of Sir Ruprecht von Lowenhohe and leaves it to join the cause of the Freemen of Uri.

"Mountains are Free" is an enthralling story—a story of stirring timess—a story as bright and simple and clearly outlined as some old illuminated manuscript of the period of which it tells.

Theodore Nadejen's illustrations are both vivid and decorative and they depict an excellent story in a vigorous and sympathetic manner.
