Born on May 7, 1946 in London, England, Rosen later attended medical school but dropped out to earn a degree in English at Oxford University. After working for BBC a short time, Rosen decided to be a freelance writer. Having held various jobs, including broadcaster, lecturer, and performer, Rosen also wrote poetry for children. His first book called
Mind Your Own Business established Rosen as a children's poet, and then he toured schools to encourage students to read poetry. Rosen continued his own education, earning a M.A. in children's literature from Reading University and a Ph.D. from the University of North London. For British radio Rosen does documentary work and is a presenter of BBC Radio 4's
Word of Mouth show. This author has penned 140 books and is currently the fifth appointed Children's Laureate, a position he will hold until 2009.
