Told from a young girl's perspective, this story gives students a first-hand look at western expansion. As Martha and her family journey in a wagon train to the famed land of California, they endure many hardships and experience true adventure. Will they be able to endure  the long journey across rivers, mountains, and deserts? Where will they find food and water to replenish their supply? Most important, will California be the land they have dreamed of finding?
