A mother leaves her three girls at home while she goes and visits their grandmother, their Po Po. But then someone shows up at their door claiming to be their Po Po. If this is Po Po, why does she have such furry feet and sharp hands? The answer is that it's not Po Po, but a fearsome wolf. Thankfully the eldest girl is smart, and she takes matters into her own hands to save her sisters and get rid of the false Lon Po Po.

Ed Young uses striking shadows, pastels, and panel art to tell this tense story. Unlike the traditional Red Riding Hood story, this one has the girls coming up with a clever (and slightly horrific) plan to save themselves. Bravery and self-reliance are the morals of the day. The clever interplays between light and dark in the illustrations help to drive this point home.

Review by Lauren Shearer
Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time.
