The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

This new book by Olivia Coolidge contains an unusual collection of the legends and myths of the northern countries. It is a rich compilation of the northern lore which has provided background for some of our greatest literature, music, and drama. No mere retelling of well-known stories, these tales are drawn from original sources and recreated with vigor, skill, and real feeling for the cold barrenness of the North.

Many of the legends are unfamiliar to boys and girls who will be thrilled with their discovery of Sigurd, hero of Wagner's great operas of the Volsung; of Beowulf, hero who killed the vile monster, Grendel; of Loki, most mischievous of the gods; of Fenia and Menia, who are still grinding salt at the bottom of the sea.

Full page black and white illustrations and border designs are done by Edouard Sandoz, illustrator of Mrs. Coolidge's earlier book, Greek Myths. He has skillfully captured the strength and spirit of northern gods and goddesses, heroes, and beautiful maidens.
