A teacher of science and biology before instructing kindergarten for twenty years, Oberlander wanted the best learning experiences for her grandchildren. Basing her work on pediatric books, articles, and her own teaching and philosophy, she has created Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready. This handbook helps parents understand how and what to teach their children during the various stages of the child's early life. Age-appropriate activities in her book encourage children of different learning styles to develop and grow in their knowledge. In 1999 Oberlander earned an alumni achievement award from Longwood College, her alma mater. She has addressed many groups of people, helping them understand the ways of children and early childhood development.
