The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Davey Wyatt's story is probably the story of many boys from many families who set out for California in the 1850's - but his own refreshing way of observing and reacting to what goes on around him makes his story very special.

Davey was not enthused about leaving his friends and the happy life in Elroyd, Iowa, and spending four months on the trail. He was not concerned about things such as "tomorrow" and "change" and "opportunity" that his pa talked about.

The trip across the country was a difficult one. There were hazardous water crossings, Indians, cholera, wolves, deserts, and snow to contend with. The wagon train that the Wyatts joined suffered its share of the tragedies that such a trip engenders, but in the end Davey Wyatt becomes not only a Californian but also a man.

Donald Honig's thorough knowledge of western Americana extends even to the dialect of the era. His Davey Wyatt is a brilliantly believable and appealing character who conveys the actual day-to- day experience of a covered-wagon trip far better than the most detailed nonfiction account.
