When John F. Kennedy was a United States Senator, he wrote a book called Profiles in Courage. This book is about several great Americans who had the determination to do what they thought was right.
John Kennedy admired this kind of bravery. In many ways, he was courageous himself. As a boy, he fought to win in sports. As a Navy lieutenant, he swam miles to save his shipwrecked crew. As a politician he stood fast for the things in which he believed: freedom, equality, peace.
Kennedy's presidency was called the New Frontier because he wanted America to push ahead to a better way of life for all. He was full of fun and zest, and he loved to romp with his children in the White House. Kennedy's greatest hope was that children everywhere would never know a world war. His work did much to make this vision possible.
Charles P. Graves, the author of Benjamin Franklin, Fourth of July and other Garrard books, interviewed many of Kennedy's boyhood friends and teachers while preparing this biography.
