The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

One day a visitor was trying to find Hull House. He asked an old Irishman, "Do you know where Jane Addams lives?"

The Irishman smiled. "Oh, yes. Miss Kindheart—she lives with us."

Jane Addams had just moved into Hull House, a rundown mansion in the slums of Chicago. Jane had decided to live among the poor and be their neighbor.

Before long Hull House was famous. It had a nursery, a gym, an art gallery. Children put on plays there, grownups studied English. Jane pioneered in other ways. She fought for laws to stop child labor. She started Chicago's first public playground. And she was the city's first lady garbage inspector! Later she helped start the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

As a college girl, Jane was the popular president of her class. By the time she was an old lady she was loved all over the world. Helen Stone Peterson, an ex-social worker and the author of Henry Clay, brings Jane and her neighbors warmly to life.
