Herod was compelled to destroy those he did not trust, from the slaughter of the innocents to the assassination of most of his family and closest comrades. He was called "Great" not for his personality at all, but for the great number of building projects he oversaw in his constant efforts to ally himself with the Roman Empire. His combination of cruelty and political desires made him a truly fearsome tyrant.
