Henry Huggins is a third grader whose life changes when he adopts a hungry stray dog whom he names Ribsy. This is the first book about the children who live on Klickitat Street in Portland, Oregon—the childhood neighborhood of author Beverly Cleary. Originally published in 1950, Henry Huggins reflects a more innocent time in American history. Henry and his friends are free to roam their neighborhood, getting into such adventures as entering their dogs in a pet show, raising guppies, digging up worms for a fishing trip, and participating in the school Christmas pageant. Occasional B&W line drawings accompany the text.
