Harry Potter must not go back to Hogwarts.
It's Harry's second year at Hogwarts, and all is not well. After ignoring a warning from a strange visitor, Harry begins to meet misfortune at every turn. A mysterious force stalks the halls, striking unwary students with paralysis. Harry hears whispers in the walls. On top of that, he discovers that he can talk to snakes—a power heretofore reserved to the evil Lord Voldemort. With fear running high and Harry's friends falling victim to the menace, Harry must delve into the past to solve the mystery of the chamber of secrets. But what he finds there will not be pleasant....
Like a giant basilisk slithering through the pipes of Hogwarts, the pros and cons of the previous book slip right back into this second installment. Harry meets situations where he and his two friends choose to break the rules, or at least bend them a little—from an escape in a stolen flying car (twice!) to brewing a highly dangerous potion in an empty bathroom. But each time they also end up facing the consequences of their actions, whether its being stuck in a whomping willow tree (not a good thing), facing the side effects of a potion gone wrong, or hours of detention. Though Chamber of Secrets is darker in tone than its predecessor (mostly due to the sinister mystery that is the main plot of the book), the series continues to uphold the virtues of friendship, self-sacrifice, and courage, while condemning things like cruelty, cowardice, and vanity.

Review by Lauren Shearer
Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
