Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew their God and were determined to be faithful to Him. As they diligently applied themselves to the study of the literature and language of the culture around them, Daniel 1:17 says "God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom." The result—when they stood before the king they were able to speak with authority and credibility. When Nebuchadnezzer looked at Daniel, he saw a young man of integrity and diligence. How can we prepare our high-school aged children to speak with the same authority and credibility to their culture? The study of literature can be an effective means towards that end!
As you study ancient literature, you'll have a chance to talk about a number of important issues: Who is man? What determines a man's fate? What is a true hero? Who is God and what does He want from us? What is the proper relationship between the individual and the state? Every culture has a set of answers to questions like these. Every culture's answers must be tested and examined in the light of what the Bible teaches. One of the rewards of studying ancient literature with teens is the joy of helping them prepare themselves to give their culture a defense of the hope that is within them.
