Fritz Kredel

Born on February 8, 1900, in Michelstadt, Germany, Kredel studied hard and learned the skill of woodcuts. By 1936, with the unrest in Germany, particularly for Jews, Kredel emigrated to America. In New York he taught at Cooper Union. An extremely talented man, Kredel did the illustrations for books such as Aesop's Fables and Grimms' Fairy Tales, among the over 400 hundred works he illustrated. Kredel also illustrated the children's book called Christmasby Eleanor Roosevelt and was commissioned to design a woodcut of the Presidential Seal for John F. Kennedy's inauguration. Kredel passed away at age 73.
