Nap and Winkle are two friends who dig up a bone. They start to argue over who gets the bone, and turn to a variety of untrustworthy characters to arbitrate their dispute. No one cares about their quarrel. Finally, when a large dog tries to make off with their prize, they realize how petty their argument truly is.
Nicolas Mordvinoff's illustrations are loose and fun. They make use of just four colors, skillfully alternated between pages. The reason for that is largely practical. At the time color printing was very expensive. Artists had to pay extra for each additional color. Finders Keepers is an appropriate title for this recently reprinted book. One of those books that are great for reading aloud, it's one vintage picture book find worth keeping.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
