On Wednesday we walked down the road from our inn to tour
Craigdarock Castle. The man who built it
grew rich on coal. Rich enough to build a home that the
neighbors decided it should be called a castle!
This is a model of what the castle looks like from the outside.
The spacious sitting room and resplendent
fireplace. I think the attention to detail is amazing
in houses like this. Everywhere architecture is a form of art
in this home.
Would you care for some tea?
Another cool thing about old homes is all the little alcoves that
they have.
This organ is situated in the round part above the door that you can
see in the model.
Each landing on the wide flight of stairs has one of these alcoves.
The piano is an 1895 Steinway.
This is the breakfast room. Can you imagine,
a whole room, just for breakfast? It's a lovely room,
with the sunlight streaming in through the windows and shining on
the nicely set table.
The big piece of furniture on the left is a "sideboard."
Servants would set breakfast out upon it
early in the morning, and people could come as they were ready.
I thought the high chair was cute!
Hungry?
Lovely bedrooms full of fine furniture.
This is the man's room. Notice the antlers on the wall and the
phonograph player.
The pool table was huge!
And this is the smoking room. The image depicted in stained
glass is a picture of Sir Walter Raleigh,
the man who brought tobacco back to Europe and made smoking popular.
It was very clever of the designers of the house to put him in their
smoking room!
