Elizabeth Cleaver

The illustrations of Elizabeth Cleaver have distinguished some of the best Canadian picture-storybooks and have brought her international recognition. The books she has illustrated include The Wind Has Wings: Poems from Canada, The Mountain Goats of Temlaham, How Summer Came to Canada, The Miraculous Hind, which she also wrote, The Witch of the North, Canadian Wonder Tales, and The Loon's Necklace. She was the first recipient of the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Medal for illustration for The Wind Has Wings, awarded by the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians (an award she also received for The Loon's Necklace) and of that association's Book-of-the-Year Medal for The Miraculous Hind. As the representative of Canada in 1972, she received a 'highly commended' citation from the Hans Christian Andersen Awards Committee. She was elected to membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1974.
