Robert Dabney (1820-98), who was for forty years Professor in Union Seminary, Virginia, U.S.A., was in the opinion of Dr. Archibald Alexander, 'the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not in the world'.

This handsome 4-volume set is in excellent condition and presents the essays and musings of one of the titans of American Presbyterian thought.

Volume 1 (Theological and Evangelical) is a collection of shorter essays. It begins with a theological and evangelical study. Dabney's essays include topics such as Bible translations, God's grace, and the Sabbath.

Volume 2 (Evangelical) is a collection of essays covering a broad spectrum of practical life issues important to the Christian faith. It covers a wide range of topics from the question, "What is a call to the ministry?" to the subject of praying for one's country.

The third volume (Philosophical) includes Dabney's treatment of issues in society which are of perennial concern to the Church of Christ, including Anti-Christian Science, Secularized Education, Strikes and the influence of Roman Catholicism. A number of biographical skethes of great Christians whom Dabney knew also appear, including one of General T. J. ('Stonewall') Jackson, to whom Dabney had been Adjutant-General during the Civil War.

In Volume 4 (Secular), Dabney explores many various secular topics interwoven with theological topics as well. It recounts historical figures and events from the War of Northern Aggression.Other topics include current issues of the day such as slavery and women's suffrage.A narrative of J.B. Baldwin interviewing Abraham Lincoln is included.
