The success or failure of a home school depends on the man of the family. It seems counter-intuitive to say it when mothers are the ones who shoulder the bulk of the responsibility, but without the necessary support from husbands they're likely to give up or go psycho trying to balance housework, children's schedules, having dinner ready, grading homework, etc.
Todd Wilson offers twelve chapters each based on something a homeschool mom needs from her husband, including his money, his time, his listening ear, his leadership, and his encouragement. Help! I'm Married to a Homeschooling Momis for men, and whereas books written to encourage moms to keep on keepin' on are pretty common, this one is written to help men know what their women need and how to give it to them.
Of course the most important thing a woman needs from her husband is that he maintain a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. Though he covers it specifically in the last chapter, this is the foundation for everything Wilson says, and this becomes not just a book about being married to a homeschooling mom but one about spiritual leadership and the need for fathers to guide their families in all areas instead of observing passively.
It's hard to say whether Wilson is serious when he says the only thing harder than being a homeschooling mom is being married to one, but it's probably safe to chalk it up to sarcasm. Jokes and rudimentary cartoons abound (some of them pretty funny, others unbearably cheesy), but that doesn't mean he takes his message lightly—this is a call to men to step up and fill the role God intends for them.
And because men have jobs in addition to wives they need to support, Wilson keeps it mercifully short. He makes his point succinctly and doesn't dwell unnecessarily on any topic. Where applicable (and always at the beginning of chapters) he includes Scripture verses, but he isn't preachy, instead maintaining an attitude of encouragement and exhortation. Highly recommended for homeschool dads everywhere.
