This is my second year using Sequential Spelling. I love it! The program progresses and builds naturally, without imposing superficial “grade level” standards; it can be easily slowed down for younger or slower students and sped up for older or precocious students; it gives you a script to follow if you want, but it is easily adaptable to your own style; it is non-consumable; it is inexpensive. The child never goes on with a misspelled word, but must correct an error immediately; I think that is important.

Because some phrases, some names, and some words with apostrophes are used, I use our spelling lessons to talk about grammar (capitalizing names, what apostrophes mean, etc.) as well. So now if I dictate a word that ends with an 's' suffix, my 7yo will ask, "Does something belong to it or is there more than one?" Since my 7yo is a strong reader, we aren't doing phonics, but I use the spelling words to reinforce and review phonograms, as well, dictating phonograms if he has to rewrite a word.

You don’t need the student response book unless you like buying expensive notebook paper. We have found using a small whiteboard and dry-erase marker works best, because erasing is easier and faster.
