"Our cousin Ephraim is quite in raptures over the country," said Aunt Esther, looking at Aunt Nannie a little defiantly. Sally looked too. She wished Aunt Nannie wouldn't shut her mouth in a straight line and pinch in her nostrils. They all wanted to go. But Aunt Nannie would never give in.
"I have told my brother," she was saying now in her solemnest way, emphasizing the words with such nods of her head that her ear-drops danced, "and I will tell you all, I will never leave my own fire nor sleep in any but my own bed."
"And I say," said Uncle Joseph firmly, "that go to the Penobscot we shall, and Nannie with us." Uncle Joseph and Aunt Nannie looked at each other and their eyes flashed.
Sally belongs to a household full of aunts and uncles, all headed by her Uncle Joseph and ruled over by his sister Nannie. But now these two are at loggerheads, caused by Cousin Ephraim's letter, urging them to resettle in his Maine vicinity. Fortunately Uncle Joseph has a clever plan. It will launch them on a winter saga into the unknown, which Sally, in company with her lively and lovable relations, will enjoy to the hilt. A story full of early American detail, set in the era shortly before the War of 1812.
