One of the most basic and continuing problems of man's history is the question of the one and the many and their relationship. Is the one ultimate or is the many ultimate? Where does authority lie: in democracy or in an elite, in the church or in some secular institution, in God or in reason? The one refers to unity and oneness. The many refers to the particularity of individuality of things. The universe is full of a multitude of beings. Is truth concerning them inherent in the individuality or is it in their basic oneness?
