Historical Setting: Antarctica, 1929

What if suddenly you found yourself on the high seas bound for the Antarctic?

Young Victor Redmond won just such a chance that October day in 1928. The Byrd expedition was off for the South Pole, and Victor found himself signed on board the Norwegian whaler Larsen as radio cadet and cabin boy.

The ships crossed the equator, made port in New Zealand, and finally started on the last lap of the journey. The adventure-packed days were filled with wonders of the southern seas, of whales and seals, penguins and icebergs. The shout of Hvalbast—"Thar she blows!"—meant whales ahead! And long boats raced through icy seas with harpoons ready for the whale hunt.

Then the Larsen returned to New Zealand. Here Victor's love for his sled dog Comet made him a perfect trainer for the huskies that would help in the great push to the South Pole. At last the day came—Thanksgiving, November 28, 1929. In the whaler's radio shack, standing off Ross Barrier, Victor heard the words that Byrd had made it. For the first time in history, man had flown over the South Pole!

We Were There books are easy to read and provide exciting, entertaining stories, based upon true historic events. Each story is checked for factual accuracy by an outstanding authority on this particular phase of our history.
