Legendary tales of Robin Hood first began to appear as early as the 11th century in the form of ballads and chronicles, providing us with most of what we know about him. However, the earliest surviving written mention of him comes much later than that, in one of the great English poems of the Middle Ages: Piers Plowman by William Langland, written in 1377.

Although stories of Robin Hood and his outlaws have changed over the years, with new plots and characters added, one thing has remained constant—the idea of a group of comrades living together in the forest and doing battle against a hostile and unjust outside world.

No one knows for sure whether Robin Hood actually ever existed, but the story of the famous outlaw and his band of fearless followers has timeless appeal.
