With the spate of publicity surrounding the possible health risks posed by childhood immunization, parents are no longer simply following doctor's orders and automatically having their children vaccinated. Instead, they are asking questions. The problem is the search for answers only leads parents to conflicting, one-sided information: doctors claim that parents are endangering their child's life if they refuse shots, while radical vaccine opponents claim parents are endangering their child's life if they accept shots.

With The Vaccine Book , parents finally have one, fair, impartial, fact-based resource they can turn to for answers. Each chapter is devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive discussion of what the disease is, how common or rare it is, how serious or harmless it is, the ingredients of the vaccine, and any possible side effects from the vaccine. Ultimately, parents will have to make their own informed decisions as Dr. Bob Sears is neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine. But The Vaccine Book will provide exactly the information parents want and need as they make their way through the vaccination maze.

Vaccine Facts (at Least, the Document-able Ones)
Sincerelyornot, 6/20/2011
When it comes to medicine, most people these days are long on opinions but short on facts. I enjoyed this book because, while the author has his own opinions, he provides both facts and supporting documentation.

Intended Audience: parents whose kids are of the age to vaccinate.

What you'll learn when you read this book: What each vaccine is for, brief history of the disease/s involved, how the vaccines are made, chemical content of each vaccine, common side effects of all vaccines, and, common and less common side effects of individual vaccines. Also has various suggested schedule's for limited vaccination, recommended brands, etc.

Dr. Sears's perspective: Vaccines are good in general but there are legitimate reasons to get and not get each one individually. Collectively, they are useful to rid our society of deadly diseases: measles, for example. Its most convenient for doctors (and the two-parents-working-kids-in-public-school-society-at-large) to give the shots the way the government recommends. Just because its most convenient for doctors doesn't make it right for your child, and parents should be educated

Usefullnes rating: ten out of ten. Gives enough information for each vaccine to make an educated decision (or to research further for yourself), but not too much to overwhelm you. Also, doesn't bother with "maybe might be" vaccine theories (each one is a whole book in itself, so it was nice to find something that focused on the big picture).

Dr. Spears does a wonderful job of giving you the facts about vaccines without pushing his opinion on you. For each vaccine he tells you about the disease, how mild or bad it can get, the vaccine, how they make it, what is in it, what is controversial about it, the potential side-effects, why some people don't do it, and what he recommends.
I really appreciate his humble attitude. He also has several alternative vaccine schedules, and helpful hints for how to talk to your doctor about it.
I recommend this book for every parent. It will equip to know either why you don't want a vaccine for your child, or why you do!
