This book is about the ancient Egyptians and their world. It tells the story of a brilliant civilization that flowered for over 3,000 years in the valley of the River Nile. For our knowledge of ancient Egypt's people, customs and institutions, we depend largely upon the ability of historians and archaeologists to extract meaning from surviving monuments—pyramids, temples, tombs and statues. Many of these are illustrated in this book.
Part One tells us about the geography and history of Egypt from predynastic times to the Greco-Roman period. It also tells us about Egypt's rulers, the extent of their power and the strength of their army, about their system of writing and about their burial practices.
Part Two takes us on an exciting voyage down the Nile from the temples at Abu Simbel, recently rescued from the swirling waters at Lake Nasser, to Alexandria amid the shifting sands of the delta. Specially devised maps ensure that our voyage is as vivid as any Nile cruise.
