Witch of Blackbird Pond

by Elizabeth George Speare
Publisher: Yearling
Mass market paperback, 249 pages
Current Retail Price: $6.99

Kit Tyler knew, as she gazed for the first time at the cold, bleak shores of Connecticut Colony, that her new home would never be like the shimmering Caribbean islands she left behind. She was like a tropical bird that has flown off to the wrong part of the world. And in the stern Puritan community of her relatives she soon felt caged as well, and lonely. In the meadows, the only place where she could feel completely free, she meets another lone and mysterious figure, the old woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond. But when their friendship is discovered, Kit is faced with suspicion, fear, and anger. She herself is accused of witchcraft!

  A Story of Judgment

Get ready for some good discussion with your children when you read this book. First let me clear up any misunderstanding that this book is about witchcraft. It is not. It is set in colonial Connecticut when people with differing religious views were often misunderstood, which led to hatred and accusation. It is a story about prejudgment and friendship and growing where you are. It is well worth your time and will spark great conversations with your 3-7th graders. And maybe in the process you will learn to see people differently.
