What do you do when you live all alone on a mountain but desperately want to learn to read? Amber is a little girl who longs for both friendship and books, things that are hard to come by when you live on a great big mountain. But when a new family comes to the mountain, it looks like Amber might get both. The new girl has a wonderful book of fairy stories, and is determined to teach Amber to read. Like her family’s mule, Rockhead, Amber needs to be stubborn and keep at it, even though learning to read and write is difficult. When it comes time for her new friend to leave the mountain, Amber realizes just how important her news skills are.
