Historical Setting: Cold War Europe, 1950s

The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

12 year old Latsi Kerek is being sent to a state orphanage in communist Hungary because his grandmother has died.  He wants to join his parents in Sweden and joins forces with another boy to escape.  The plan goes wrong and he is left to make his own way across the border and across Europe when he only speaks Hungarian and has no one to help him.  It is a first-hand picture of Europe during the 1950s from a man who made the trip from behind the Iron Curtain in Budapest to become a Swedish citizen.
