This alphabet book employs the twenty-six letters to introduce important figures, symbols, and themes from American history. Some of the words will be considered in our day to be culturally insensitive (R for Redskins, for example) or something of a stretch (X for Xmas), but many of the words hold deep meaning for patriotic Americans.
American ABC is gorgeously illustrated by the famous artistic duo Maud & Miska Petersham and was a runner up for the 1942 Caldecott.
