CLIFF DWELLERS of Walnut Canyon

Everyone knows that Indians lived in America long before white men came. Some of these early Americans made their homes in forests, but others dwelt on the seashore. Many tribes roamed western plains and prairies, hunting buffalo. Still other tribes built towns on high land or on cliffs.

We often think of the Cliff Dwellers as a special group of Indians. That, however, is a mistake. Most Cliff Dwellers had relatives whose towns were built in open country or in valleys. All Cliff Dwellers had farms on level ground. There the Indians grew corn, pumpkins, squashes, and beans.

This book describes a tribe of Cliff Dwellers that lived in Arizona about 800 years ago. We learn how these people built their houses, which were made of stones and clay. We examine wild plants which the women gathered and discover how tools were shaped from stone. We also watch the making of pottery and share the excitement of visits from traders who brought copper, sea shells, gems, and parrots. We find that dances really were ceremonies in which men who wore sacred clothing prayed and gave thanks to their gods.

Illustrations consist of fifty-nine drawings by Albert Orbaan and Dr. Fenton. There is also a map which will guide both young readers and their parents to the most important Cliff Dweller ruins, as well as to ancient towns that were built in valleys or on level ground.
