When fourteen-year-old Chu Ju realizes her new baby sister will be sent away to uphold tradition and comply with the law of the land, she determines not to let that happen. Instead, she leaves her rural home in modern China during the middle of the night, vowing never to return. The book depicts her life as she earns food and shelter by working on a sampan, tending silk worms, and planting rice seedlings, while wondering if she will ever see her family again.
