Cheryl Harness

Cheryl Harness

An author and illustrator of historical works for children, Cheryl Harness was born in California on July 6th, 1951. As a young girl, she was nurtured by Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories and the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Harness has a longtime love of art and stories, and has a degree in art education from Central Missouri State University. While striving to enter into the world of illustrating, Harness made ends meet by designing cards for Hallmark and Current, although she tenaciously continued her own writing and art pursuits. Finally, she brought her first work to the public, and has since released numerous popular children's books on historical events. Among her works are Remember the Ladies: 100 Great American Women, Mark Twain and the Queens of the Mississippi, and The Revolutionary John Adams.

Cheryl Harness makes her home in Independence, Missouri, the "Queen City of the Trails," a couple of blocks away from the big white house where Harry and Bess Truman used to live. She lives with Mimi (a black and white Shih Tsu), and Merrie Emma (a cross-eyed scaredy-cat). As an author, illustrator, public speaker, and presenter in many an elementary school, Cheryl is known for her engaging, entertaining approach to history, her detailed watercolors, and the way she plays her harmonica.
