The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

The author-illustrator team who created The Mexican Story now turns to our great northern neighbor: Canada, land of natural wealth and beauty and of a fascinating mixture of peoples. May McNeer's text and Lynd Ward's illustrations provide a vivid introduction to this world of forests, rivers and lakes, much of it not so different physically from our own northern country, yet with a unique story of its own. It is a world peopled by French, Indians, English, Scotch and Eskimos; by trappers and priests, settlers and prospectors; a world which produced men like Cartier, Champlain and Frontenac and colorful figures like the Le Moyne brothers and Paul Bunyan. The sweep of Canadian history from the first explorations through modern times is suggested by a series of short chapters, many of which are lively stories and anecdotes built around these figures, or the lives of ordinary people—if people of such vigor and courage and indeed be termed ordinary.

Lynd Ward, Caldecott Medal Winner, has designed and illustrated the complete volume, which is printed in four colors from drawings made by the artist directly on lithographic stone. The result is a book worthy in its beauty, range and vigor of the great land that inspired it.
