Within these pages Florence and J. B. Jackson re-create the history of black people in America, from their arrival through the time when the United States government was formed.  In addition to discussing slavery and the slave trade, the Jacksons also describe opposition to slavery by both blacks and whites and the achievements of some blacks who were able to overcome seemingly unsurmountable obstacles and to contribute to the culture of early America.
