In the Spring of 1869 the rails of the Central Pacific and he Union Pacific were joined in the Utah territory with a Golden Spike.

Covered wagons still pushed westward. Buffalo roamed the prairies in great numbers. Indians rode free, and square riggers sailed round the Horn to California.

Suddenly passage from coast to coast was possible in only eight days—and four men were responsible.
