The Barnes' Notes offer straightforward, verse-by-verse exposition of and thorough introductions to each book of the Bible meant for both preachers and laity. OT volumes are written by a variety of authors: James G. Murphy, F. C. Cook, E. B. Pusey and Albert Barnes; all NT volumes are written by Barnes. The writing is mellow, easy to read, not prone to unsubstantiated conjecture, reasonably thorough, and was obviously written by authors more interested in what the Bible said than in pushing some belief. This is a good buy for anyone who is studying the Bible.

That said, Barnes was an Arminian, and obviously did not believe in protestant reformed theology, as taught by Martin Luther, John Calvin and others. The commentary set reflects this bias when discussing atonement and election.
