James B. Jordan

James B. Jordan

James B. Jordan is the founder and director of Biblical Horizons, a theological think tank that publishes books, monographs, essays and taped lectures focused on Bible commentary, Biblical theology and liturgical theology. According to Jordan,

"The perspective seeks to be thoroughly Biblical and comprehensively catholic, while maintaining the distinctive insights of the evangelical and Reformed understanding of the true religion."

His speaking and writing has had a great deal of sway in our church (RCC) over the years, and you can see his influence in works by numerous other authors, many of which we carry. Books like A House for My Name by Peter Leithart and A Table in the Mist by Jeffrey Myers have directly tributed Jordan's Through New Eyes.

Jordan was born in Athens, Georgia and grew up in a Lutheran church. He attended Roman Catholic school and a Southern Baptist Sunday school. Later he attended the University of Georgia, where he received a B.A. in Comparative Literature (1971) and participated in Campus Crusade for Christ. After serving four years in the Air Force as a military historian, he attended Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, but ultimately finished his M.A. and Th.M at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, with a master's thesis on slavery in the Bible. In 1980, Jordan became associate pastor of a Presbyterian church in Tyler, Texas, and began directing Geneva Ministries, an educational foundation that eventually became Biblical Horizons in 1988 . In 1993, the Central School of Religion, England, awarded him a D. Litt. Degree for a dissertation on the dietary laws of Moses.

Since 2000, Jordan has been head of the department of Biblical Studies at Biblical Theological Seminary, St. Petersburg, Russia, where he teaches Old Testament and Eschatology a few weeks out of the year.

Jordan has authored hundreds of articles and monographs, as well as several books, including The Sociology of the Church (1986); Through New Eyes: Developing a Biblical View of the World (1988); Creation in Six Days (1999); and several books of Bible exposition, including commentaries on the laws of Exodus and the books of Judges, Revelation, and his latest on Daniel, The Handwriting on the Wall (2007).

At the end of 2007, Jordan is at work on a commentary on Zecheriah. He makes his home in NW Florida and cares for his wife Brenda, who is battling cancer.
